Mayor Nutter Rappels Down Center City Building For Fundraiser

By Steve Tawa

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Someone told Mayor Michael Nutter to "go ahead and jump off a tall building" - and you know what - he did! For a good cause.

The adventure began when the Mayor took the elevator to the 31st floor of the One Logan Square building, 418 feet up, and then went up on the roof. Then, he got hooked up for a high adrenaline rappel down the facade of the building. He reflected once his two feet settled back on terra firma.

"Tremendous trust in the organization. You have to trust your gear, and, you have to trust yourself," Nutter said.

He joined more than 130 others who did likewise, stepping off the roof and out of their comfort zone, to support scholarships for Philadelphia Outward Bound School programs.

"It's a personal growth experience. I know I was talking to myself up there," said Katie Newsom Pastuszek, Executive Director of the Philadelphia chapter. "Our students learn that nothing is insurmountable in life."

It was Outward Bound's signature fundraiser.

"It costs a lot of money to put a student fully outfitted on all of the gear and equipment on a five day backpacking expedition."
