Mayor Kenney Urges Young People To Vote At Community College Of Philadelphia Event

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Community College of Philadelphia is hosting a civic engagement summit today with the focus on getting out the vote in November.

Speakers on stage stressed the importance of voting. Jamiel Alexander with Opportunity Youth United helped organize this summit because he says too many young minorities feel their vote doesn't count.

Mayor Jim Kenney told the crowd that sitting home on election day is a slap in the face to John Lewis and other civil rights pioneers.

"It's a disrespect for Dr. King. Disrespect for him (Lewis) it's a disrespect for everyone who sacrificed their lives for the right to vote."

And he wants everyone to drag their friends and loved ones to the polls as well.
