March In Like A Lion With Large Winter Storm On The Way
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia was just shy of tying a record low Friday morning with the thermometer bottoming out at 11 degrees. Stats aside, it's a frigid end to the work week with daytime highs no warmer than the low 20s.
Once we hit the weekend, the focus shifts to the next large winter storm set to strike the Delaware Valley. A cross-country system, the storm moves completely onshore in California on Friday before moving into the Plains this weekend.
We know two things for sure:
1) This is a moisture-rich system. So regardless of type, we'll see a lot of precipitation.
2) Timing has remained pretty consistent. We start to see the impacts as early as Sunday afternoon, likely starting with a wintry mix of snow, rain and perhaps some icing. By Sunday night into early Monday morning (as temperatures drop and the core of the storm gets closer), we're in the thick of the system, with a good shot for moderate snow.
The biggest unknowns with this storm are precipitation type and amounts. However, the latest model guidance has begun to trend colder. In other words, our potential for significant snow goes up, i.e. six or more inches. There's actually a good chance for the northern half of our area to pick up close to a foot or more.
We'll be able to fine tune details once the storm is fully onshore, and will continue to deliver updates as we know more.
