Many Dogs Serve As Service Dogs

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - There are many breeds of dogs that adapt well as assistance and service dogs; dogs who assist people with disabilities to live more independent and fuller lives. The most popular choices are Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and, of course, German Shepherds but many other breeds are generally recruited as well, including the Husky, Border Collie, Doberman Pinscher, Boxer, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Dalmation, Australian Shepherd, Pointer and even Standard Poodles. But never discount the many, varied mixed breeds and shelter dogs. These, among other breeds of dogs, provide amazing services including becoming the eyes and ears for those who are challenged and impaired, as well as providing their overall balance and stability.

These incredible dogs provide support in performing practical daily tasks. Their skills are extensive including aiding the deaf and guiding the blind. Many are even trained to be seizure-alert dogs as well and can detect a potentially serious problem before a situation even occurs. They're trained to know exactly what to do the moment a person is in distress, how to successfully do it effectively and to keep the person safe in doing so.

These dogs perform amazing tasks everyday with tremendous results. It's no wonder why dogs are truly man's best friend.
