Man Receives Prison Sentence For Role In Shootout Outside Daycare In South Philly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to up to 17 years in prison for his role in a March 2013 shootout outside a daycare near Mifflin and Point Breeze in South Philadelphia.

A man on the street was wounded, but fortunately no children were hurt.

One stray bullet hit the window of the "It'z A Kidz Thang" daycare, and a worker said she and others covered the kids, shielding children from six-months to 11-years-old with their own bodies.

Prosecutor Jennifer Mitrick says, "The judge says defendant Emmanual Whitmore turned the street into a Wild West town. No child should have to be in that kid of danger in this city or any city."

Mitrick says two other shooters were also convicted and sentenced to prison earlier.
