Man And Women Arrested For Leaving 2-Year-Old Alone In Apartment

RADNOR, P.A., (CBS) -- Radnor Police say the father of a 2 1/2-year-old little boy and his female companion are under arrest after they discovered the child, wearing only a t-shirt and diaper, alone inside an apartment Monday morning.

Stanly Hampton and Brittany McFadden face charges of endangering the welfare of children and recklessly endangering another person after the little boy was found by officers in a trash-strewn apartment with burners on a stove turned on to provide heat.

Sgt. Mark Stiansen and a team of Radnor officers went to the apartment after being alerted a child might be there by a neighboring department who had just stopped Hampton on a drug possession charge. The Sergeant, a father of 3, says he was shocked by what he saw when the little boy opened the door, after struggling to undo deadbolt locks.

"He was wearing just a t-shirt, the apartment had unsanitary conditions, garbage on the floor, dirty diapers," the Sergeant explained.

"An animal should not be living in this apartment, that's the kindest words I can say," added Radnor Police Chief William Colarulo.

Officers believe Hampton and McFadden had been gone about an hour when the little boy was found. After arresting the two suspects, officers quickly concentrated on doing all they could to help the frightened little boy.

"Two of our officers did walk him over to our police station," Sgt. Stiansen said.

"He's currently there watching cartoons on our computer. He's in good spirits, but as I can imagine, he's probably very confused right now."

The little boy is now in the care of Delaware County Youth Services.

Hampton and McFadden are both in Delaware County Prison after failing to post $50,000 cash bail at their arraignments.
