Malvern Man Accused of Stealing Gifts Meant For Trash Collectors

By Brad Segall

MALVERN, Pa. (CBS) -- Authorities in Tredyffrin Township (Chester County), Pa. have arrested a Malvern man whom they say was stealing cash and gift cards that residents were leaving as holiday presents for their trash collectors.

Police say there were at least a half-dozen incidents, and there may be more.  They say residents in Malvern, Berwyn, and Wayne reported the theft of money and gift cards that were taped to trash cans.

Police arrested 50-year-old Norman Demko of Malvern and charged him with theft and receiving stolen property.

Police credit an alert resident who saw him allegedly take the envelopes and then speed off in his car.  He provided police with a partial plate number, and they were able to track down the vehicle.

Tredyffrin police are working with other area police departments to see if they have any reports of similar thefts, and they say the investigation remains open.
