Police: 1 Injured After Dump Truck Overturns In Delaware

BEAR, Del. (CBS) – Delaware State Police continue to investigate after they say a dump truck overturned in Bear.

Police say the accident happened at about 2:30 p.m. Monday as a Mack Truck was traveling on DE SR1 southbound just north of DE Rt. 72 (Wrangle Hill Road) in the center lane.

According to police, as traffic began to slow in front of him, investigators say the driver sharply applied his brakes and began traveling in a southeast direction into the center median of the highway where the left hand side of his truck struck a wire guardrail.

Police say the truck then overturned onto its left side spilling approximately 20 tons of dirt into the northbound lanes of DE SR1.

The driver was trapped in his vehicle for approximately ten minutes until he was extricated by responding fire department personnel, according to police.

Police say he was taken to Christiana Hospital where he was admitted with serious injuries.

The driver was cited by troopers with Following Too Closely, according to police.

The northbound and southbound lanes of DE SR1 were partially closed for about two and a half hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
