Low-Income Residents Treated To Free Pet Wellness Day In West Philly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Residents of the Mantua section of West Philadelphia took advantage of a free wellness event for pets on Saturday.

There was a long line as residents brought their cats and dogs to get them checked out by a veterinarian, get vaccinations and even to receive, leashes, food, treats and toys.

Tissa Burns was there with her 7-year-old dog, Louie. She says pet care is expensive and the event will help her breathe a little easier.

"I really appreciate it. This is a help for us," Burns said. "Especially the ones that can't get a lot of shots or things done to their dogs. This is a really big help for everyone."

Sharice was there with her cat to make sure Tidy Bowl is in tip-top shape.

"I love Tidy Bowl, I love her," she said. "She is co sweet. I got her when she was only six weeks old.

Many of the pets in line have never seen a vet before.

The free pet wellness day was organized by the Pennsylvania SPCA and HousePaws Mobile Veterinary Service.
