Longwood Gardens Recognized For Meadow Garden Expansion

By Lynne Adkins

KENNET SQUARE, Pa. (CBS) - Longwood Gardens in Kennet Square has received an award for the expansion of its beautiful Meadow Garden.

The Garden is now 86 acres and Land Steward Specialist Tom Brightman says it's a sweeping space with an emphasis on education:

"We added many trails, accessibility pads, planted over 100,000 herbaceous plugs -- all native species, 1,100 native trees and shrubs, we renovated an old 1700's farmhouse which is kind of the destination of the new garden and it has many interpretive displays inside it."

The 2015 Land Ethics Award was given to Longwood Gardens for the Meadow's use of native plants and its sustainable design protecting the environment.
