Longtime Education Notable Phoebe Haddon To Head Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) -- The Camden campus of Rutgers University will get a new chancellor this summer.

Phoebe Haddon is currently dean of the law school at the University of Maryland.  Come July, she'll succeed Wendell Pritchett as head of the Rutgers satellite campus that serves more than 6,000 students.

Haddon spent 30 years at Temple's law school before taking on the Maryland job five years ago, so this is a homecoming of sorts.

"I am very, very familiar with the Delaware Valley area and Camden in particular," she said today, "so I know about the university as well as the community.  And know of its challenges, but also the opportunities."

She takes over as a state-sponsored partnership with Rowan University continues to develop on the health sciences front.

Haddon says she wants to continue what she calls the "civic engagement" between the school and the city it calls home.
