Local Utility Company Uses Drones To Keep An Eye On Its Infrastructure

ALLENTOWN (CBS) -- A local utility company is using drones to keep an eye on things.

PPL Electric Utilities has two drones that are used when it's more convenient or safer than putting a worker at risk according to Joe Nixon, a spokesman for the Allentown-based company.

"The drones are used for inspection of line segments, they're used for if we have an issue in a certain area we'll take the drone and go check that out, same thing with the substation, we can really get a great view of things without having to use a manned helicopter or a bucket truck," Nixon said.

He said the drone cameras offer fabulous up close views and the machines are being used regularly, but are not being employed to take the jobs of humans.
