Local, State Officials Take Closer Look At Latino Voters In Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- City and state officials gathered for a town hall meeting Wednesday night to discuss Latino voters in Philadelphia.
Sabrina Vourvoulias with AL DÍA News co-moderated the panel. She says it's a much needed conversation.
"Discuss everything from why there is low Latino voter turn out in Philadelphia," she said, "how the Latino voter in Philadelphia is changing."
Vourvoulias says understanding and learning about Latino voters is something that is often overlooked.
"Mostly they've been talking about it from the outside looking in," she said. "It was really important for us to get Latino politicians, Latino members of the political class involved in talking about the Latino vote."
Vourvoulias says Philadelphia has a low voter turn out for Latinos compared to the rest of the country, but their aiming to change that.
"We've become a very crucial part of the electorate as long as we vote," she said.
Among others, Panel members included Philadelphia City Council member María Quiñones-Sánchez and Pennsylvania State Representative Leslie Acosta.
