Local School's Mural Project Brings Classroom Teachings Into Real World

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The McMichael Promise Academy in Philadelphia's Mantua neighborhood is getting a facelift with a project that is putting classroom teachings into action.

More than 50 volunteers poured into the school on Saturday morning to paint the mural that will eventually wrap around McMichael Promise Academy.

"They actually have one class per week where they actually spend time using math concepts to help design this mural," says school principal Brian Wallace. "Then they put together the mural. So the students have actually designed it done the work on it and put the thought into it."

Wallace says the schools facelift is intended to do more than just add some eye candy to the neighborhood.

When they come in feeling brighter about their future by just walking in and seeing the way the school looks from the inside and the out," he says, "they are better prepared for preparing themselves for the future.

The mural has a science and math environmental theme and will be finished later this year.
