Local Researchers Receive 24-Million Dollar Grant

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Local researchers are part of a group receiving a 5-year 24-million dollar grant.

The money from the National Science Foundation will help researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and six other centers study the way cells are influenced by their environments. Dr. Yale Goldman is Professor of Physiology at the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine said it is a team effort.

"Our main partner institution is Washington University in St. Louis, and there are scientific collaborations and also there will be a pipeline of very diverse students, mostly graduate students, who will come from some of the other institutions who will come here to Penn and to the Washington University for training."

He said the research could lead to improvements in crop management and sustainability and help lead to advances in cancer prevention and wound care.
