Link Between Depression And Heart Disease

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - We know that it is extremely important to treat depression early and to follow closely those who suffer from the condition but we are learning that there are other reasons to take note as well.

Researchers in Norway have found a link between depression and heart disease. According to their studies, depression may significantly increase heart failure risk.

It is all part of a population health study where researchers followed 63,000 people for an average of more than 11 years, starting in 1995. Those with moderate to severe depression had a 40% increased risk of heart failure.

The researchers suggest that the stress hormones associated with depression lead to inflammation and atherosclerosis, putting hearts at risk.
