Learning How To Speak 'American'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - "How's it going?" "What's up?" ...these are openers of many conversations when Americans are speaking with one another. But to newcomers who want to "fit in" they make no make sense.

Every language has its idioms and slang; but how do you learn?

The Free Library of Philadelphia, Parkway Central, at 1901 Vine Street, can be a major source of help and fun. Each Thursday night, 6:30-7:30, there's a conversation hour for international adults - a place to talk and build confidence speaking English.

It's not a class, but a casual setting - no one gets called on, no exams, no readings, but small talk about holidays, customs and anything members of the group want to discuss; and new topics are encouraged.

Make friends with those from other countries as you learn English. And when your neighbor asks, "What's up?" you'll have an American answer.
