Lawmakers Repealing Common Core Standards
By Dr. Marciene Mattleman
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Policy makers, educators and those concerned about the quality of education across the country have heralded the Common Core as a way of ensuring standards in schools nationwide. Almost every state signed on. But Oklahoma is an example in which legislation has been passed to repeal the standards and Missouri and South Carolina are moving in that direction, as well. Indiana has already undone its adoption.
In Oklahoma rejection is built on fears of federal overreach, of threatening a waiver from the No Child Left Behind Act.
Concerns elsewhere mention lack of professional development for teachers and finding appropriate instructional material - no longer just opening a textbook.
But since the standards are in place, dissatisfied districts are concerned about further disruption since core implementation has begun.
A report in Education Week mentions some of the problems.
