Law Enforcement Cracking Down On Distracted Driving In Montgomery County

ABINGTON, Pa. (CBS) -- Eyes forward and both hands on the wheel, as law enforcement in Montgomery County is stepping up enforcement of distracted driving.

Though texting might be the main culprit, Montgomery County DA Kevin Steele says distracted driving includes talking on a cell phone, changing the radio station, and putting on make-up.

"Police have even witnessed people changing clothes, brushing their teeth, and reading a book."

The county has put together a training video to help police identify and report distracted driving.

Abington police chief Bill Kelly says, "We are the ones that see the victims of those accidents, and we are the ones who will have to go out and do the enforcement and we will do that."

Chief Kelly says they need to change the perception of distracted driving, comparing it to drinking and driving: frowned upon now, but socially acceptable a generation ago.
