Last Day For City Residents To Earn Discount For Paying Real Estate Taxes Early
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- This is the last day you can pay your Philadelphia real estate taxes for this year and get a discount for early payment. And it may be your last chance ever to get the one percent discount.
The Revenue Department threw a taxpayer appreciation day on Friday, typically the busiest day, because of the expiring discount, at the customer service center in the Municipal Service Building. Ernestine Freeland was there to pay early.
"I'm a senior," she said. "So I try to be as thrifty as I can so my checks will last from month to month."
But Freeland could lose her incentive. Councilman Allan Domb has introduced a bill that would cut the discount in half. He says it would save the city $9-million. But it would cost Freeland. Still, she says, she'd pay early.
"That's the way my mother raised me," Freeland said. "Take advantage of a good deal when you see it. It may not be much, but it's still a deal."
