Large, Metal Tree Sculpture Installed Along Ben Franklin Parkway

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Another piece of art is being added to Philadelphia's museum without walls. A large sculpture is being installed along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Center City.

Using welding torches, cherry pickers and other tools, New York artist Roxy Paine and his crew installed a 34-foot high, 3.5 tons of stainless steel sculpture called "Symbiosis"

It depicts two trees, a smaller one supporting the upper half of a snapped off trunk of a larger one.

Penny Balkin Bach is the executive director of the Association for Public Art. She says the art will remain at the site near 24th and Pennsylvania avenue for one year.

"It was created in 2011, but was in storage at the artist's studio in upstate New York," Bach said. "So it's so exciting to bring this into public view for the first time. We are so lucky to be able work with such an artist of his stature."

The public is invited to meet the artist at a free ceremony on June 6th fropm 5pm to 7pm to celebrate the sculptures arrival.
