Lankenau Hospital Patient Steals Van, Crashes During Escape Attempt

LOWER MERION, Pa. (CBS) -- A patient was injured while trying to escape a hospital in a stolen delivery van in Lower Merion, Montgomery County.

It happened around 4 a.m. Thursday when a man, wearing a hospital gown, escaped Lankenau Medical Center with an IV still in his arm and stole an Aramark truck.

Police say the patient drove about 200 yards from the hospital before the vehicle struck a fence, rolled down an embankment and stopped on its side near a body of water.

The man was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania with serious injuries.
