La Salle University Makes History During Inauguration

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- La Salle University officially inaugurated its first ever layperson and woman president in a history that stretches back to 1863.

Dr. Colleen Hanycz has served as interim president for the last three months, and has immersed herself in university life with students and staff.

"I have come to believe that presidential years are like dog years. I am certain that I have been with you for at least seven times that long. Throughout this period of three or 21 months, I have often reflected on what it is that distinguishes La Salle University from that long list of others around us," said Dr. Hanycz.

She says faith, service and community are the traits that set LaSalle apart. Hanycz says La Salle must recommit itself now to providing a college education to those who might not have it otherwise.
