Though Leonardo Da Vinci was sketching parachute-like devices five centuries ago, French hot air balloon enthusiasts were the first to try it out as a life-saving means of escaping a crash in the 1800s.

That design in the 21st century has a new application as a life-preserver for heart failure patients. An implantable device inspired by that historic shape is available in clinical trials at Deborah Heart and Lung Center in Burlington County.
