KYW Flashback: Valley Forge Sheraton Construction Site Vandalized By Angry Union Members
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- It took more than two years to bring 11 roofers to trial in the 1972 union assault on the Valley Forge Sheraton construction site.
Montgomery County was riveted by the ongoing story as construction union members vandalized property belonging to the developer.
They were determined to teach Leon Altemose a lesson. He had hired non-union labor to work alongside his unionized crew.
By 1972, the suburbs were providing most of the areas new construction jobs and the unions wanted the entire pie.
Of more than a thousand men who invaded the King of Prussia site, trashing equipment and structures, only 11 were identified and arrested. They all served time.
