KYW Flashback: Protesters Sour Philadelphia's Republican National Convention
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- Hosting a major political convention sounded like a good idea at the time.
The 1968 Democratic gathering in Chicago during the most turbulent of political times had been forgotten. However, the year 2000 was one of celebration, and Republicans coming to Philadelphia were a reserved crowd.
But KYW reporters in Center City described the appearance of protesters, hitting the streets, snarling traffic, hurling trash cans, vandalizing stores and even knocking the police chief off a bicycle.
The major protest was the infiltration by law enforcement of their meetings. As for the convention -- it nominated George W. Bush and cost the city nearly 40 million dollars.
Next year, the Democrats arrive.
