KYW Flashback: "Little Saigon"

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The desperate dash for the last helicopter out of Saigon is etched in memory. The year was 1975 and the Vietnam War was ending in chaos.

Within weeks, many of those who escaped found themselves at Fort Indiantown Gap near Harrisburg. They were to be resettled. KYW reporters detailed their perilous journey.

It wasn't long before many arrived in Philadelphia and changes were noticed in the collective culture of the city. One more flavor was added to the melting pot. An area near the South Philly Italian Market was being referred to in feature stories as "Little Saigon."

New businesses were being opened and Philadelphia schools were absorbing another language. Vietnamese was now woven into the regional tapestry.
