KYW Flashback: Breaking Ground At The Limerick Nuclear Power Plant

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- It was June of 1974 when the ceremonial shovels churned the ground at what would become the Limerick nuclear power plant.

It would be another 12 years before the plant would produce it first kilowatt for sale. But several years before construction began, KYW's Suburban Bureau would face its first challenge - learning the language and the basic theory of nuclear energy.

The protests, hearings and apocalyptic predictions were making news coverage of the issue, a major priority. It became a contest between those who valued the pristine patch of land on the scenic Schuylkill River and those who envisioned growth.

Limerick would soon become the fastest growing township in the region.
