Jungle Book Fights Off Competitors To Take Top Spot
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Jungle Book was a tiger at the box office. The latest movie version of the Rudyard Kipling classic, The Jungle Book, raced to a runaway first-place finish, earning an estimated $103-million on its initial weekend of release, the second-highest April opening in film history.
In second place was the second comedy sequel, Barbershop: The Next Cut, with Ice Cube and Cedric the Entertainer. It took in a respectable $20-million on its first weekend.
That dropped last weekend's leader, the comedy holdover, The Boss, to the third slot with a total of $10-million. The weekend's other debuting attraction -- the Kevin Costner crime thriller, Criminal – earned a modest $6-million, good for a sixth-place finish.
Overall, industry-wide totals far surpassed those of last weekend and the same weekend last year.
