Jay Wright On Buzzer-Beater: I Always Say 'Bang' In My Head

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- For the shot of a lifetime, Jay Wright's reaction was pretty confusing.

After Villanova junior forward Kris Jenkins buried a three-pointer at the buzzer to beat North Carolina in the National Championship game, the Wildcats' 15-year head coach was not smiling.

"I got caught up," Wright told Michael Barkann and Ike Reese on the 94WIP Mike & Ike Show. "In all those end of game shots, when we shoot it I always say in my mind, 'Bang!' And when the other team shoots it I say, 'No blank way.'

"I really thought there was going to be like .3, .4 seconds left and I was thinking I gotta get these 18-22 year-old's under control here. That's what I was looking at that."

"I said to the ref, 'Terry is there time left?'" Wright continued. "He said, 'There might be. The shot is definitely good, but there might be time.' Then our staff jumped on me and I never got to hear anyone say the game is over, you won. It was just celebration."

For Wright, 54, his life may change now that he won a National Championship. He has no idea what to expect.

"I really don't know [what is to come]," Wright said. "I don't want it to change. I like, I just like being a coach, a coach at Villanova. I hope it stays the same. I'm gonna work hard at that and I don't know what's coming. I think we'll try to talk to some people that have done this and get some advice."
