Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Zerns Farmers Market

By Jay Lloyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- On a frigid day last weekend, KYW's Jay Lloyd took a drive in the country to one of the region's most unique markets.

Zerns at Gilbertville can be all things to all people. Yes. There's a bustling auction. Hard to find tools or vintage electronics that can be cannibalized for that elusive part. But at its heart is the food. Lorraine Brinkman sells exotic spices and teas.

"Because more people are getting food conscious now," Brinkman says.

I make a bee-line to pickle purveyor Philip Dolgan to satisfy a frequent craving. I'm not alone.

"Our garlic pickles are by far our most popular," Dolgan says.

The best this side of the Lower East side. You can also get a $10 haircut, find a counter full of chicken gizzards, hearts and livers, old-fashioned candy and Lancaster County sausages. For many here, a day at Zerns is a ritual.

"It's not just buying stuff.  You make friends," say one visitor. "It's weekend getaway."

And the magic of finding something that you absolutely loved as a kid.
