Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Veterans Beach Break

By Jay Lloyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Veterans and active duty military get a "thank you" again this year on many New Jersey beaches.

Cape May County got the ball rolling a couple of years ago by waiving beach tag fees for all active duty military members, spouses and kids. Veterans also qualify for a thank you beach tag. Diane Wieland, County Tourism Director, says Cape May is very conscious of the importance of the military.

"Because we have the Coast Guard base right here in Cape May."

But most veterans like Jack Hennessey, at a Coast Guard vets luncheon last week hadn't heard the news.

"Wonderful. We spend a great deal of time in South Jersey - in Cape May County."

And the program has been spreading to shore communities, including Atlantic and Ocean Counties. Active duty and National Guard simply show an ID card. Veterans will need their DD214 form, a county issued veterans card or other proof of honorable discharge. Enjoy the R and R on the house.

Check you favorite beach resort web site for Veterans Beach Tag availability.
