Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Upper Vermont's Lake Champlain Region

By Jay Lloyd

VERGENNES, Vt. (CBS) -- Getaways can be relaxing and recharging.   Here's an ideal spot for one, on the Vermont banks of Lake Champlain.

The lake, steeped in American history, sparkles at Basin Harbor, where small boats wait for guests to motor or paddle out in brilliant sunshine.

"We really view it as 'active tranquility,' " says Bob Beach, a fourth-generation member of the family that has taken Basin Harbor from farm to resort.

His view is echoed by frequent guest Rick Meyer, from Montgomery County, Pa.

"It reminds me of a summer camp for adults," he tells KYW Newsradio.

And their first-class chef, Christian Cruze, has a simple approach that turns camp food into a culinary adventure in a formal dining room.

"Seasonality and fresh are really how my menus are driven," he says.

Then, mix in a rustic pub, a lounge bar, an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, gardens, and cottage-on-the-lake accommodations, and it's a memorable getaway!
