PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Fewer Americans are expected to celebrate Cinco de Mayo south of the border this year.
Just in time for Cinco de Mayo, the State Department has issued another warning about travel to Mexico. Most Mexican states are effected, with the northern ones drawing the most strident alarms.
The update was issued April 15 and can be found at travel.state.gov. It deals with random and targeted violence related to drug warfare, robbery and ransom motivated kidnappings. So, if you were thinking about that spontaneous getaway for some street corner tacos in a border town like Matamoras, better check out the State Department web site first.
There are also current alerts regarding terrorist threats in popular European destinations. They are scheduled to expire in late June but can be updated at any time.
Tips include cautionary notes about avoiding crowded places and signing up online for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program which keeps you in touch with the nearest U.S. embassy.
