Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Skinny Skiing

By Jay Lloyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- When snow blankets the ground, it's time to rethink recreation and mobility.

When snow snarls the streets, skinny skis are the way to go. Europeans have been cross-country skiing for centuries.

"Europe has used their cross-country as a get-to, go-to. It's a means of transportation," says ski equipment Guru Charlotte Griffith, who runs Salter's Ski Shop.  "Here everybody looks at it as recreation."

During last week's blizzard, Griffith's phone came off the hook with cross-country questions.

"They come running in," she says. "They get all excited about going to the parks."

Use them to get to work or for recreation in parks and on bike paths. It's dynamite exercise and gets you from point to point in an invigorating environment. And for a winter getaway, cross-country skis and a nearby Pocono Mountain retreat are hard to beat.
