Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Pack Tight

By Jay Lloyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It's the time of year when getaway packing and changing weather become a challenge. KYW's Jay Lloyd recalls a lesson from the past.

It's been 60 years since I swapped a well-traveled seabag for a civilian suitcase. But I still remember how that duffel was packed to carry everything I owned on land, sea and air over four exciting years.

Now, when I stow the Tee's and shorts to favor jeans, khakis and crew necks, I remember the old sailor's packing method. Tightly roll clothing to maximize storage and minimize bulk, It's amazing how many shirts can fit into limited space.

For long weekend getaways, two pair of pants, one worn for travel, the other rolled is enough. I also wear, not pack a sport jacket, topped by a 3/4 length, lightweight cool-weather coat.

If for some reason, more is needed than fits in an overhead bin bag, on arrival head for the nearest Goodwill store and fill in for a few dollars. Then donate it back when you leave.
