Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Holiday Boat Safety

By Jay Lloyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- As record numbers of boaters are expected on area waterways for the holiday weekend, KYW's Jay Lloyd sounds an often ignored warning.

Plunging fuel prices have encouraged more people to take to crowded waterways. Many of them are inexperienced.

"There's always the risk for collisions and accidents to occur," says Lt. Art Windemuth of the Maryland State Police marine unit.

At the top of the list for holiday boaters is a warning about the effect of booze and beer on factors that have already muddled minds and bodies.

"The wave action, the sun, the wind," Windemuth says.

And as the holiday crowd becomes more casual about safety, one joy riding favorite, riding the bow, recently turned fatal for a young New Jersey boy.

"There's only one place that person is going to end up," Windenuth says, "that's under the boat and through the prop."

Bow riding is illegal - and in this case fatal. Be safe.
