Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Fun Winter Activities For Non-Skiers

By Jay Lloyd

LAKEVILLE, Pa. (CBS) -- If you like the idea of snow-filled getaways in scenic mountain settings but aren't in the mood for skiing, how about considering some unique alternatives?

There was a time that snow bunnies simply lounged in lodges while their companions plowed down the ski trails.  But now there's more to do than just sipping hot toddies to a mountain backdrop.

Take the Poconos. There's snow tubing everywhere, and at picturesque Lake Wallenpaupack you can join ice fishermen for an exhilarating day -- and maybe bring back some dinner.

"It's just gorgeous this time of the year," one man told me.

And for something completely different, a visit to the Sculpted Ice Works at Lakeville, close to Wallenpaupack, where artists use 100 tons of ice to craft a unique and growing display for next month's Crystal Cabin Fever event.
"We continue to add more and more and more to it," says artist Mark Crouthamel proudly.

You can even take a ride on a giant ice slide (top photo).

But when all that's done and you rejoin your skiing crew, lounging in the lodge with a hot toddy or cool brew fuels the perfect end to a perfect day!
