Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Escape To Gettysburg On Papal Weekend

By Jay Lloyd

GETTYSBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- As prices head upward at some of the most popular papal weekend getaway destinations, perhaps looking westward is a good option.

Most getaway seekers think of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania as a great spot to take the kids for an immersion into history. In other words, an education oriented trip. But when autumn leaves are on view, all of that changes. Adams County, less than 2-1/2 hours away, offers romantic date nights, top-notch golf, fall festivals and as Eric Flynn who runs Liberty Mountain and Carroll Valley Golf Course notes, Gettysburg offers crowd-free room to roam.

"Leaves are changing," Flynns says. "You have so much of the park to yourself, you're not fighting a lot of traffic."

A ramble on the back roads of the nearby Catoctin Mountains is spectacular. There's antiquing and great dining. Hotels rooms for a papal weekend getaway can be had for under a $100 or relax at a resort with golf packages at about $175 a day.
