Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Cross-Country Skiing, Just About Anywhere

By Jay Lloyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  Trying to looking on the bright side of this snow-filled winter?  Here's a way:  a low-cost getaway option is seeing a resurgence.

Cross-country, or "Nordic," skiing has taken a bounce in popularity with the recent and repeated appearance of snow-covered streets and a blanket of powder over nearby open spaces.

Charlotte Griffith, at Salter's Ski Shop in Eaglesville, Pa., isn't surprised at the growing interest in Nordic ski equipment.

"We're doing great," she says.  "We have the snow!"

So where do you go for a day's outing on those skinny skis, without getting too far from home?

Griffith has plenty of suggestions:  "Open fields, Valley Forge Park, Evansburg Park, down in the Wissahickon.  You don't need a trail," she advises.  "All you need is the right equipment, the right clothing, and get out there and have some fun."

But if you want a destination getaway with a Nordic flair, there are cross-country ski resorts and centers.  In Pennsylvania, check out the Crystal Lake Center, north of Muncy (Lycoming County).

If you're willing to go a bit farther, my favorites are the Woodstock Inn and the Trapp Family Lodge, both in Vermont.
