PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- For crab crackers, an important date has just passed. The Maryland season for blue crabs is officially open.
Grab your traps and crab lines and make a bee line for the Chesapeake Bay. Crabbing season is here and as water temperatures rise, crabs on the upper bay will be coming out of their hiding places and be ripe for picking. I put in a call to crab guru Chris Lingerman at Chester River Seafood. He tells me the early crop on the lower bay looks promising.
"Already on the lower bay, they're catching more than they can sell," Lingerman says.
Lingerman expects the upper bay to start producing in about a week. He also expects to see larger, meatier crabs this year and with tempting prices.
"Obviously, if you got too much of something the price comes down," he says.
But if you plan to catch your own, know the rules. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources posts them online.
