Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Backyard Ice Skating

By Jay Lloyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- If you just can't wait for that winter weekend jaunt to the mountains, KYW's Jay Lloyd found a neighbor, building his own backyard getaway, to be enjoyed any day of the week.

Ice skating in your own backyard. It could be a Currier and Ives print.

"Family standing around the fire pit, having fun, having conversation," says Brian Vassalluzzo, "and the kids having a ball on the ice rink."

But where do you start to build an ice rink?

"You purchase the brackets," Vassalluzzo says. "It comes in a kit with the liner."

Vassalluzzo cuts his own plywood flooring.

"You throw your liner in," he says, "add water and hope it freezes."

As for the kit, Vassalluzzo bought his online at nicerink.com. A 35 by 50 foot rink runs about $1,500. String lights for night skating, install a fire pit, maybe a Tiki bar and you've got most of the ingredients for great winter backyard getaways.

"We need family, we need fun," Vassalluzzo says, "and we need cold weather."

Good luck with Jack Frost.
