Jay Lloyd's Getaway: A Less Crowded Memorial Day Weekend

By Jay Lloyd

PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. (CBS) -- To join the crowd or not on Memorial Day Weekend?  That is the question.

I really hate crowds, whether at the shore, in the mountains, or on the bay.  But a holiday getaway near home can yield a lot of relaxing options.

We're lucky. We live in an area that offers fun, nature, relaxation, and more than backyard barbecues, all within shouting distance of home.

One of my favorites spots from past holidays for weekend solitude is the Schuylkill Canal and River, near Phoenixville.

"You just really unplug," noted one female river paddler.  "There's no cell phones out there, no computers."

You can rent canoes, kayaks, or inner tubes at Fitzwater Station, just outside Phoenixville.  And if you want to mingle or restore yourself on your return, there's a pub with an outdoor deck.

Or, how about a picnic on scenic French Creek, at St. Peter's Village.  Bring a fishing rod. You might even catch something for your dinnertime barbecue.
