PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- On this date fourteen years ago, a young singer's life was cut tragically short.
Aaliyah died in a plane crash on August 25th, 2001 along with eight others shortly after takeoff from the Bahamas. The star was there filming a music video. She was twenty-two years old.
Today across social media many people are remembering Aaliyah, including the legendary Janet Jackson. The singer posted on both Instagram and Twitter this handwritten note remembering her.

Aaliyah took part in an MTV special honoring Jackson earlier in 2001, introducing a dance performance featuring Usher, Mya, and Pink. Jackson would also be featured shortly after Aaliyah's death, honoring her at that year's MTV Video Music Awards.
Even in her passing, Aaliyah remains one of the most successful R&B artists in history.
