Investigation Continues Into Deadly Tour Bus Crash In Delaware

NEW CASTLE, Del. (CBS) --The National Transportation Safety Board is now investigating a deadly tour bus crash in New Castle, Delaware.

Two people were killed and dozens were injured after a tour bus overturned Sunday afternoon.

The crash happened just after 4:30 p.m. on the Route 1 off ramp.

Police say a bus carrying 50 people was exiting onto the off ramp to U.S. 13 northbound in New Castle when the driver lost control while traveling around a curve. The bus left the roadway and flipped onto its roof.

Police say 54-year-old Hua'y Chen of New York City was ejected from the bus and then got pinned underneath it. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second woman, 30-year-old Idil Bahsi from Istanbul, Turkey, suffered multiple traumatic injuries and was transported to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center where she died several hours later.

Forty-eight other people on board were injured. As of 5 p.m. Monday, a total of 20 people remained at Christiana Hospital.

One is in critical condition, 7 are in serious condition, 10 are in fair condition and two are in good condition.

"It's almost from like a war zone," explained Elvis Cruz, who drove past the crash after it happened. "Everyone was so cut up, missing bits and pieces of arms and face. There was no one on the scene without blood on them except for me."

Cruz said he stopped, grabbed a First Aid kit and did what he could to help.

"Everyone was crying and bleeding out," he said, "and screaming for help."

Among the dozens of victims, two of them were children.

Police say the bus is owned by AM USA Express based out of Chinatown, New York. The passengers were part of a sightseeing tour group that was returning from Washington D.C. when the crash occurred.

The 56-year-old bus driver was treated for minor injuries. Police say any charges against the driver will be determined when their investigation of the crash is complete.

Delaware State Police say a preliminary investigation has determined that drugs and alcohol is not considered a contributing factor in this crash.

Police say they are not filing charges in this case at this time.

The deadly crash remains under investigation.
