Interim Ramp Eases Tangle Where Rt. 42 Meets I-295 in South Jersey

BELLMAWR, N.J. (CBS) --      That new, "temporary" ramp connecting Route 42 and Interstate 295 in Bellmawr, NJ is going to be around for several years.

It's a long-term project designed to untangle the bobbing and weaving traffic at the interchange between Route 42 and I-295 in Bellmawr.

The new temporary ramp that opened last weekend, connecting northbound Rt. 42 to northbound I-295, includes a median that keeps traffic flowing by eliminating the need to merge.

"Basically, we did some work that gives motorists the first taste of what this direct-connection project is," says New Jersey Department of Transportation spokesman Steve Schapiro.

Shapiro says the interim ramp will be open for several years, as construction continues.   When the $900-million project is finished in the year 2021, traffic on I-295 will flow on several bridges over Rt. 42, without having to merge with cars heading north on 42.
