PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The folks at Philly Tech Week assembled a panel of social media managers and marketing professionals to discuss the the power of the platform, and how it's more than just a pretty picture.

Instagram is one of the fastest growing social networks and now brands are flocking to the platform.

William Warren of Mitchell and Ness describes Instagram as a digital mall.

"As far as getting product in front of someone, there's nothing better than Instagram- a photo feed with limited amount of copy and we also have a link in our bio that lets you shop your favorite feed," said Warren.

"For us, it's really about reaching the masses, sharing recipes, sharing their information and just establishing more of that food community," said Laurie Satran of STARR restaurants, who uses Instagram to establish community.

"You have the ability to maneuver around Instagram from a location tag, through a hashtag but also build out a different repository of insights on your community," said Nate Nichols of the Palette Group, who uses the platform to deep dive into a culture within a community that you might not otherwise have access to.

One thing most of the panelists agree on is that Instagram is not an advertising channel. It's about creating community: connecting brand and person.
