In Wildwood, Merchants Gearing Up For The Season's Start

WILDWOOD, N.J. (CBS) -- The summer season is getting underway "down the shore" -- with hundreds of thousands expected to hit the beaches from Atlantic City to Cape May over the Memorial Day weekend.

Despite the classic oldie "Under the Boardwalk," it's actually what's on the boardwalk that counts.

Ask Dave Roach, owner of Laura's Fudge in Wildwood, in business since the 1920s.

Roach admits there are some changes in the neighborhood -- like a bistro on the boardwalk featuring salads.  But he doesn't mind.

"We don't need fifty t-shirt shops all in one row, y'know?   I mean, it's nice to see a breakup up there of other, different varieties of stores," he said.

But don't worry.  There are still quite a few stands selling pizza, curly fries, and salt water taffy.

The one thing they can't control here is the weather.  But after the winter we've been through, most here are just hoping for a break.  And opening weekend, at least, is looking good.
