CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) -- Hundreds of Camden residents lined up today outside the Price Rite supermarket on Mt. Ephraim Avenue to get a free turkey for Thanksgiving.

At the same time, they got a surprise visit from a champion boxer.

Boxing legend and light-heavyweight champ Bernard Hopkins partnered with Price Rite to give away 500 turkeys.

Hopkins, a Philadelphia native, handed out the frozen birds, took pictures with fans, and gave words of encouragement to the Camden residents.

"I give love where I can give it," he says. "I'd like to say thanks to them for supporting me and also understanding that I never forgot where I came from."

"I told my kids they were going to have turkey subs if I hadn't gotten a turkey," said Karen (no last name given), who received one of the free turkeys and says it'll be a huge help.

"It's so much better because I have 17 grandkids and eight great-grands," she said.

Jason Ravitz, whose family owns the Price Rite, which opened last month, was delighted to take part in the turkey giveaway.

"For us, this is natural, and we love being able to help other people,"he said today.

The Price Rite is the first new supermarket in Camden in more than 40 years.
