Ice, Frigid Cold Could Make For A Rough Commute Back To School For Students

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The School District of Philadelphia will be open Thursday but officials want parents to be aware of challenges students may face getting to and from school.
School District spokesman Fernando Gallard says although schools will be open, the lingering effects of the winter storm could make for a rough, and longer morning commute to school.
"The challenge is going to be transportation. Not only for our yellow buses but also for our folks, our students who are taking public transportation," Gallard said.
He says buses may encounter icy streets, slowing them down, and leaving kids out in the frigid cold longer than on a typical morning. And those slick spots on sidewalks and side streets could mean an extended, and more dangerous commute for those who walk to school. So the district urges parents, students and educators to plan ahead.
"Letting principals know to expect delays in the morning and they will plan accordingly with the students," Gallard said.
